Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Maków Podhalański
Sanctuary of Our Lady, Maków Podhalański
The late Baroque Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus (Sanctuary of Our Lady the Guardian and Queen of Families) is located in the centre of Maków Podhalański.
As of 1590 the church’s high altar has featured the widely worshipped painting of Our Lady, most likely painted in the 16th century. Catholic Church authorities officially confirmed the miracle-making properties of the painting in the first half of the 18th century. Pope John Paul II crowned the painting, protected by the fireproof plate with the image of St. Ann, on Krakow’s Błonia in 1979. The sanctuary festival falls on the feast day of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (December 8), when families dedicate themselves into the guardianship of the Immaculata in the presence of Archbishop, head of the Krakow Diocese. The second church festival falls on the feast day of the Transfiguration of Jesus on August 6, (celebrated on the Sunday closest to the date).
