“Zygmunt” Bell in Wawel was funded by Sigismund I of Poland. It is the best-known Polish bell.
It is decorated with low-reliefs: St. Sigismund and St. Stanislaus as well as the images of the Polish Eagle and Pogoń Litewska. The residents of Kraków first heard the bell on 13th July 1521. Since then it has rung in most important and special for the Polish nation moments. The Young Poland artists, particularly Stanisław Wyspiański, were fascinated by it. He immortalised the bell in his drama play “Wyzwolenie” and “Acropolis”.
